Meet “Sabi-O”: This tiny fun & functional piece of art revolves around the muse’s eyes; where the never-ending rotating arms of time radiate out of her.
The name “SABI” (寂) is literally taken from the second half of the term wabi-sabi, and it refers to “the beauty that comes with age, wear, and the natural progression of time.” The letter “O” means “thread,” “cord,” or “connection.” Part of the painting process in some of my intuitive/expressionistic artworks involves adding thread on the substrate in an unstructured way, then letting the paint flow to reveal the form the muse wants to take. The result is a highly textured and layered muse that looks complex and multidimensional just like all of us. Through the years, a constant theme in my work has been the exploration of time - permanence vs transition which are deeply tied to my artwork. Capturing emotional permanence, examining transient moments, the tension between what stays and what transforms, and ephemerality have been recurring themes in my work.
