Meet “Dasein’s Horizon”: This tiny fun & functional piece of art was inspired by merging 3 inspiring cultural philosophies: kintsugi (scars/gold), momento mori (our time is transient), and wabi-sabi (the beauty of impermanence). These philosophies invite us to accept the fragile & temporary nature of time & existence. Through the years, a constant theme in my work has been the exploration of time - permanence vs transition which are deeply tied to my artwork. At the center of the Dasein’s Horizon you find the never-ending rotating arms of time radiating out of the muse’s eye, as well as the words “TIME PASSING IS THE ONLY CERTAIN THING IN LIFE” framing the muse’s face.
“Dasein” was named after Heidegger’s philosophical concept of the finitude of time and it serves us as a motivating catalyst to live today to the fullest. “Dasein” means “existence,” “presence,” or “being-there”. This painting features gold, silver, bronze, and blue colors and each of them serves as a symbol. Gold, in Kintsugi, symbolizes healing and resilience, representing scars as a proud display of authenticity rather than something to hide. Bronze, in Momento Mori, represents the heavy, grounding weight of human existence, symbolized by the Patina of Time. Blues- at the bottom of the painting represent the vast, cool expanse of the unknown, the absolute future, and the horizon of inevitable expiration against which life shines.
